Entriamo in un vecchio ascensore e saliamo al secondo piano. I vari mandati 12 in totale , apparentemente scollegati tra loro, si riveleranno via via i pezzi di un intricato puzzle dentro il quale si celano le nostre misteriose origini.

Negli ultimi quadri torneremo nell'ospedale dal quale siamo partiti e, in una serie continua di colpi di scena, arriveremo ad un finale sconvolgente, degno del miglior thriller psicologico.

Ma torniamo all'inizio. Dopo la prima fase, il gioco si sposta avanti nel tempo di un anno per ritrovare il nostro eroe ad Hong Kong; prima missione: eliminare un emissario di una nota famiglia della mafia cinese.

E che ci vuole?!! All'inizio di ogni missione potremo consultarlo per avere accesso a molte informazioni. Grazie a foto segnaletiche e ad alcuni filmati, conosceremo nei dettagli la vittima e le persone che la circondano.

Potremo dare un'occhiata alla mappa del luogo d'azione, consultabile anche durante la missione, nella quale risultano punti di contatto con il bersaglio. Inoltre, potremo portare con noi una bussola, un paio di binocoli e una tuta in Kevlar.

Una volta ultimati i preparativi saremo pronti per l'azione. Ma come affrontare le missioni? La dinamica ideale di gioco sarebbe quella di completare la missione senza grande clamore: per esempio appostarci sopra un palazzo, imbracciare il fucile da cecchino e freddare il nostro bersaglio in santa pace. Per esempio dopo aver ucciso una guardia del corpo, un autista o un militare, potremo rubargli i vestiti e camuffarci da nemici indispensabile per avvicinare il bersaglio ; potremo, inoltre, prendergli le armi ed occultare il cadavere trascinandolo in un vicolo o nelle fogne.

Potremo gestire il nostro sicario grazie ad una visuale in terza persona a mezzobusto. Il mouse assicura un preciso "freelook", mentre gli spostamenti sono affidati alla tastiera. Graficamente Hitman si presenta abbastanza bene. Nelle prime missioni potremo apprezzare la cura con cui sono state riprodotte le texture dei palazzi, dell'asfalto e degli interni, mentre nella giungla colombiana gradiremo sicuramente la folta foresta, completamente 3D, e i caseggiati in stile militaresco.

I modelli dei vari personaggi sono resi altrettanto bene. Le animazioni sono ugualmente realistiche e contribuiscono a farci immergere in un'atmosfera quasi cinematografica. Un altro aspetto discutibile riguarda le ambientazioni. I palazzi semidistrutti, i cassonetti aperti nei vicoli, i fogli di cartone buttati qua e la ed i tombini aperti sono perfetti per rendere credibili tali scenari.

Da questo punto di vista Hitman presenta degli aspetti molto positivi ed altri decisamente deludenti. Considerato il fatto che lavoriamo da soli non avremo a che fare con compagni disubbidienti o kamikaze vedi ancora una volta Rainbow Six.

In compenso dovremo vedercela con un esercito di nemici. Peccato che non venga mantenuto su tutta la linea. Spesso le guardie si lasciano uccidere senza muovere un dito: il nostro eroe si avvicina a loro, senza che esse abbiano il minimo sospetto, si mette alle loro spalle e le accoltella; oppure, dopo aver eliminato un autista cinese, si traveste e, indisturbato, davanti alle guardie, entra nella macchina del boss e piazza una bomba, il tutto senza che nessuno osi fermarlo.

Anche per quanto riguarda il realismo del gioco ci sono alcuni elementi interessanti ed altri davvero discutibili. Ma, diversamente da come eravamo abituati negli "sparatutto", piazzare il mirino sul bersaglio e fare fuoco non equivale sempre a fare centro. Riprendere il gioco in queste condizioni non ha senso.
